I ran into some assholes in grad school, both among the professors
and my fellow students. But the only quality I found everyone of my
fellow doctoral candidates shared was a strong desire to get a Ph.D.
This often means several years during which you have little free time
and less money. In order to get through that, you must be somewhat
self-centered about how your time is spent, and you must arrogantly
believe in your own abilities to pass the tests your will face.

You must be as much of an asshole as those qualities make you.
