But don't you see there's a very similar _de haut en bas_ tone here, in that 
"exposed for what it is"?

Please don't conflate "science" and "progress." The latter -- whoo, talk about
your social constructs!! I don't find it uncomfortable to believe that (1) natural
science is cumulative and in that sense progressive, while (2) the notion that 
"science brings us progress and that's a Good Thing" is a mega-snowjob that needs 
all the challenging critical attention it can get.
