I thought in rereading this chapter that there is an interesting movement
from the script like format, ie: dialogue on a page to the cinematic like
fade out of Pointsman and Mexico's discussion on the beach:
>>>>Good. The ending is certainly very cinematic. Or is it cinematographic. Can never remember the difference.
Earlier dramatic portions might have made for a rather talky movie, altlhough the verbal encounters are excellent. There is a great deal in the espisode that is not dramatic or cinematic. All the Roger thinks, Groast thinks, Threacle thinks, etc.etc. The clinical history and Pavlov's plans to establish a physiological basis for diseased mental states. Roger's thoughts of Jessica. All highly important in telling the story. Essential this early in the book.
Still don't know what to make of final paragraph. Was there more to
hear than we thought we heard? Or is what we heard to be stricken
from the record?. Not to be admitted in evidence? Pynchon has so
many little ways of keeping us in the dark.
