I got this from a friend who should know better.

>Subject: Pssst! Pass it along....
>
>Good deeds to the holidays....
>
>Hough mifflin publishing corp. will donaite one book to a children's hospital
>for ever 25 e-mails it recieves. Please take a few seconds and email them
at:
>share at hmco.com
>
>Pass it on.... so far they have only recieved 3,400. Last year they
>recieved 23,000

Then after opining (Jeez! When's the last time anyone used that verb???)
that it sounded like a prank, I got the following from her.

Subject: yes, it was real

>From our group:

I just spoke directly by telephone with Thomas A. Dow (617-351-5381),
network administrator for Houghton Mifflin. This was a genuine offer (made
without his approval by some idiot in their marketing department) but there
was a quota of 50,000 mail messages which was past on Tuesday. Ten of
thousands of messages are still flooding in totally disrupting normal mail
service to Houghton Mifflin and doing absolutely no good.

Please, be very, *very*, *very*, VERY, *VERY* suspicious of any message,
any message whatsoever, that tells you to forward it to everyone and have
them reforward it, etc. It doesn't matter if it's one of these obviously
fraudlent criminal money chain letters, a virus warning, or a "good deed".
Any message that is trying to explode throughout the net is almost
certainly a bad idea, probably fraudulent, and possibly criminal.

Merry Christmas, H-M
