I would also like to know what you mean by coasting. I believe his
novels of the eighties are a lot more ambitious than books like "Great
Jones Street" and "Running Dog" (not to say that there aren't good bits in
all of the books). Now whether his actual achievements are up to the
ambition seems more debateable, but I would not call it coasting.
