I feel that the introduction to Slow Learner may be one
of TRP's most evocative moments. The way in which he criticizes
himself and shows the average man attemping the impossible how he
attempted to create, is rare, even among literary confessionalists.
This is an aside to Meg:
"Don't let anyone on the Pynchon list ever
bother you with their arrogant attitudes. They all wish in their
heart of hearts that they were undergrads too. Just like you. Filled
to the brim with curiosity, and not a bunch of old and wornout
opinions. Most of them are on tenture, even here on the list.
Trust me, I've heard them. Hang in there in Saginaw. I'm in Toronto."
To all on the list, Merry Christmas and to all a good night.

P.S. Tiny Tim was right!
