                I feel that the introduction to Slow Learner may be one

        of TRP's most evocative moments. The way in which he criticizes

        himself and shows the average man attemping the impossible how he

        attempted to create, is rare, even among literary confessionalists.

        This is an aside to Meg: 

        "Don't let anyone on the Pynchon list ever

        bother you with their arrogant attitudes. They all wish in their 

        heart of hearts that they were undergrads too. Just like you. Filled

        to the brim with curiosity, and not a bunch of old and wornout

        opinions. Most of them are on tenture, even here on the list.

        Trust me, I've heard them.  Hang in there in Saginaw. I'm in Toronto."
