Methinks I find a bit of left-brained, engineer's rigidity in this
dumping on vBraun. It's _poetry_ fer crissake! Okay, you don't like his
metaphor. But his metaphor is not significantly different from Teillard
de Chardin, a theologist cum archeologist. You don't have to like _his_
metaphors any better. But to say of vBraun, "Ahah! this bit of conflation
is what permitted/brought about National Socialism" is a bit tenuous.
Not to say a marked display of 20/20-hindsight. TRP obviously thought the
quote worth noting -- or inventing. And as others have pointed out, TRP
didn't exactly shy away from blurring the line between science and
something else when it suited him in GR.
If this particular quote gives you the shudders, then that's part of the
"gestalt" that GR builds for you. It's probably not worth going to war
over it, though.
