Just picked up LIFE magazine for November 18, 1957, because
it has von Braun's dour face on the cover, along with a 
populuxe rocket model.   Anyhow, inside there's a lot of text
devoted to the then-nascent US space program, interviews with
WVB, etc, including this interesting bit of characterization:
"[WVB] added, _in a characteristically poetic outburst_, 'It
[the space program] will open to him [mankind] the gates of
heaven."  Emphasis on the poetic part mine.
