Peter Trachtenberg notes:
In the late 1960s an ill-fated Boston band called THE BEACON STREET UNION or
THE INSECT TRUST (I forget which) recorded "The Eyes of a New York Woman"
from GR. I don't remember what it sounded like...

Do you mean the late 70's? Which came first, the song or the novel?

Other TRP music: Mimi and Richard Farina did an instrumental (mandolin
based, I recall) titled "V." There was a British band in the mid-80s called
"Benny Profane" and around the same time The Jazz Butcher did a wonderful
song called "Looking for Lot 49" for Creation Records. And Laurie Anderson's
"Mister Heartbreak" album includes a song dedicated to TRP called "Gravity's
Angel" ["Send it up. Watch it rise. See it fall. Gravity's rainbow./ Send it
up. Watch it rise. See it fall. Gravity's angel."] None of these contain
direct TRP lyrics, however.
Sorry if this is old news-- I've been reading the list for only a couple
months.
Jazz addendum: I always assumed McClintic Sphere was a Monk reference.
 "Sphere" was Thelonious's middle name.
