anudder question...

Gratified by the responses to my last question, I've another:

One of the most interesting and amusing parts of the received corpus of
Pynchon myth is that he continues to write under various noms de plume. I
have heard (undergrad ramblings) that TRP writes as Don Delillo and as
William Gaddis and I'm sure there's more (witness the current debate over
the pseudo-Pychon letters). What other, similar rumors have people
heard, and more importantly, _WHY_ are people so concerned to discover
Pynchon where (presumably) no Pynchon exists? Is his relative
nonprolificity that much of an affront? Any insights would be greatly
appreciated...
