I'm not sure he tackles it "head-on"...none of his books take place
during or in the war in vietnam. It's often in looking back, or
looking ahead, that we get glimpses thru TRP of the Vietnam war...
...but i'm not sure he should tackle it that way, especially bein' of
the pre-boom birth crowd...he uses WWI and WWII,
wars we "won", because they weren't mired in current politics
...Paul Fussell makes the point better than I in "The Great War and Modern
Memory,"
it would be too easy, i suspect TRP concluded. Something really hard would
be to turn WWII on its head, leaving people uneasy about that
effort...
anyway, my $.02...
