Just had a quick look at some of the strings I missed whilst away in the
middle of June, and boy it looks like some of you had fun with Mr.
Spielberg & Riefenstahl & Goebbels usw. Haven't had a chance to wade
through the 50-odd posts on the topic (will do so soon, promise) ... but
in case it didn't come up, there's an excellent round-table on
_Schindler's List_ in the Village Voice, Mar.29, 1994. My favourite
quote (cuz it's so inflammatory) is Art Spiegelman (who is practically
foaming with rage throughout the piece):
"The film is not about Jews or, arguably, even the Holocaust. Jews make
people uncomfortable. It's a movie about Clinton. It's about the benign
aspects of capitalism -- Capitalism With a Human Face. We're in Ayn Rand
country: the Businessman as hero. Capitalism can give us a health care
program, and it can give us a Schindler".
Sorry if this opens old wounds...
Hey, anybody talking about Kracauer? TRP lifted lots of film theory from
him...
Cheers,
Paul
