Uncomfortable TV

	Somewhere, Harold Bloom says that art begins when one gives up
the easier for the more difficult pleasure.  On American television,
even the best shows -- the oft-mentioned SIMPSONS, for instance -- skirt
the "uncomfortable":  the worst shows miss it by miles.
	Of course, Pynchon almost named his masterpiece MINDLESS
PLEASURES, and I suspect that, among such indulgences, he prefers the
unsanctioned to the sanctioned, a crappy TV show to some pre-understood
classic.
