     Just a few comments, if only because I started it all:

        1. MY Brazilian intimate informs me that the title of Rosa's great novel
is Grande Sertao: veredas, and NOT Veredas: Gran Sertao. "Gran" is Spanish, not
Portuguese, and just the sort of thing that drives Brazilians nuts when people
mix up the languages.
        2. "Cunha" comes from the verb "cunhar," meaning "to stamp." This un-
doubtedly explains much. 
        3. Said intimate has never heard of "ham hocks with malt," and never
wants to. 

     Me? I still wish anybody could recall the name of another Brazilian charac-
ter in an American novel (apart from At Play in the Fields of the Lord & Brazil
[by Updike]).
