Mankato is famous for three things:
1. 36 Indians were hanged here in the largest mass execution in American history
after the Dakota Uprising of the 1960s.  Lincoln commuted the number down from
over 100.


2. I live just down the block from the house of "Tacy" in the "Betsy, Tacy and
Tibb" Deep Valley children's books, written by Maude Hart Lovelace.

3. U.S. Grant's VP, Schyuler Colfax, died here while waiting to change trains--
the last seems emblematic.
