Since Melville's reputation didn't come into its own until about the time
Ulysses was published, is there any reason to think that J. Joyce had even
heard of Melville?  A-and if not, how could there be any meaningful
progression or gap between M-D and U?  Would it be anachronistic to suggest
that Gravity's Rainbow fills the gap?  Of course it would!              -jm
