When is somebody going to ask Melanie Jackson the real question behind
l'affaire Tinasky? Not `Did Thomas Pynchon write the letters?', since she's
already denied that repeatedly, but `Does he know who did?' I'm reminded of
the line in Neil Simon's Job play, ``God's Favorite,'' when after denying up
and down that he's God, the protagonist's mysterious visitor is finally asked
just who the hell he is and replies offhandedly, ``I'm a friend of God's.''
