At Swim Two-Birds is a strange bird, but it helps if you know at
least a little bit about Irish/Celtic mythology/folklore (Fergus,
Maeve, etc.)  All those mythic characters pop up in the narrative,
playing cards & such.  
I think another of O'Brian's pen-names was Myles O'Galpaheen,
or something like that--that was the name he used for his weekly
column in the Dublin papers.  I think they are also collected and
published in book form.
