All of this talk about who "They" are reminds me of this little plaque my 
mother-in-law used to have hanging in her dining room.  It was one of 
those quaint, folksy, almost hillbilly sort of artsy-craftsy sort of 
things and the saying on it went something like this:

          So they say.
          What say they?
          Let them say,
          For who be they?

And, no, my mother-in-law is not a Pynchon fan and probably doesn't even 
know who he is.
