Fil-um vs Movies

Until the advent of Andre Bazin and co., I very much doubt that
anyone made a distinction between "film" and "movies," or, as insiders
would have said, "pictures." And it's arguable that the very distinction
was one of the hairline cracks that eventually widened enough to lead to
the downfall of the American cinema. (That, and $40 million budgets and
the invention of the Avid editing system, natch). But call me an old
crank who's erupting from months of terminal silence long enough to put
in his two cents.
