Sad but VERY true.

I grew up in the California school system, at a time when it was ranked
#1 in the country. Currently, it resides solidly a the BOTTOM of the list.
A few miles south of the bay area (where I reside), a group of concerned
parents recently mangaged to get HUCK FINN removed from the required reading
list (but not from the library -- not YET, anyway) on the basis that it MIGHT
be "bad for the childrens' self-esteem" because of the "racism" expressed by
the author..... proving, I guess, that the parents 1) don't have the sligtest
clue how to read a novel & derive ideas therefrom, and 2) don't really think
their children have anything REAL to base self-esteem on, so it has to be
propped-up artificially.

>From all I've heard & read, this sort of feel-good, revisionist education-
substitute is prevalent throughout the nation. In that light, I'm suprised
that a hollywood fluff piece like SL would be as well accepted as it was
--- no car chases, no massive explosions or nemesis made of "liquid metal".
