Perhaps you're thinking of "Let There Be Light" (1946).  He preceded it (and
followed "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) with "In This Our Life" and "Across the
Pacific" (1942), "Report from the Aleutians" (1943), and "The Battle of San
Pietro" (1945).

I hereby add Samuel Fuller's "Verboten!" (1959) to the list.
