Hello, I'm writing from Piraeus, Greece. There are only two translations of
TP's work in Greek, one of "The Crying of Lot 49" (1985) and one of
"Vineland" (1996). The latter, which is quite recent, as it was published
two weeks ago, had TP's name transcribed in a way that seems quite strange
to me, that is as if the CH in his last name had the phonetic value of CH in
CHef. I wonder if there is someone who could shed some light on this: am I
right to believe that the CH in TP's name is pronounced like the one in
CHurch or CHat? And something else: should I pronounce VIneland like VIne or
like VIneyard? Excuse the naivité of my inquiry but, as the case is with
most non-native speakers of English, I seem to fail to guess the
pronunciation from the spelling, especially when it comes to proper names
and generally words which you cannot easily find in most dictionaries.
Is there a member of Pynchon-l who is either Greek or fluent in Modern
Greek? I would really like to get in touch with him/her.
