One thing ya gotta love about Pynchon is that his work itself demands to 
be treated with sincerity.  I mean, you don't just sit down and breeze 
through GR because all the kewl people are reading it.  Even COL49 is 
enough to stymie the undedicated.  I don't mean this in an elitist, "only 
smart people can 'get' TRP" way, I just mean if you've read Pynchon, 
you've been required to think about Pynchon, and if someone is capable of 
skimming through one of novels just to pick up enough gist for dinner party 
talk, well, my hat's off to them..
