MTV, as a centrally/nationally controlled entity, is as much a part of
Them as anything. Which is not to say that B&B isn't funny, but most of
MTV is corporate dreck, and the odd gem isn't worth the wait. I would
say that the trick is keeping a healthy level of skepticism about *everything*
from the regressive to the progressive while maintianing an open mind,
concentrate on learning, and hook into your local scene, whatever it
is, since that's where your contributions will have the greatest
impact.
TRP was effective because he was willing to learn both sides about the
systems he was questioning. His sympathy for the preterite extended,
it seems to me, even to the denziens of Them, since it was clear that
they could fall from grace, and become one of us rather easily.
