In answer to Rich White's query:
"Boston Marriage" is a term once used for when two women would live together
to save money and support each other. (I once had a great-aunt who had
such an arrangement.) This has led to speculation about lesbian relationships
in literature and elsewhere (Henry James's THE BOSTONIANS being one of the
more notorious examples).
