CALL FOR PAPERS
Annual Meeting of the
MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION
Washington, D.C. 27-39 December 1996
Special Session:
FIN DE SIECLE AVANT-GARDES AND IDENTITY POLITICS
Accepting papers theorizing post-1970s intersections of
ethnicity, nationalism, or gender with the avant-garde in
text and/or performance. What are the political,
hermeneutic, and/or aesthetic implications and impasses of
a 'radical literature of identity'? How do author and/or
audience and/or text and/or theoretical assumptions impact
and shape this radical art? Is aesthetic/formal hybridity--
as in perfomance art--a way out of or a complication of the
potential contradictions of an essentialist avant-garde?
Can art combine essentialist identity politics with avant-garde
agandas, and if so how are contemporary artists accomplishing
this? Does the avant-garde offer alternatives to essentialist
identity? Who is doing this, how, and why?
Accepting 500- to 700-word proposals or 10-page papers. Proposals
should be appropriate for 20-minute presentations and should be
accompanied by a vita summary. Please include visuals or a
description of them if they will be necessary to your
presentation, but do not send originals. Manuscripts
acknowledged but not returned.
SUBMISSIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN MARCH 15, 1996.
SEND PAPERS, PROPOSALS TO:
