_GR_ as an L.A. novel? Well, one early interpretation was of a Los
Angeles audience of the seventies watching a WW II movie,
but this seems kind of lame. Tacked on to make us aware of the filmic
qualities of the book (among other things). Besides, L.A. novels always
have a movie writer in them.
The Santa Monica freeway, from the moment it became an alternative
to the Hollywood for East/West (preterite/elect) movement, was a
harrowing experience day or night as my mother's '71 Impala
could testify. (East and West are states of mind where they are not
directions.)
I do find one fault with the book re freeways. The Harbor Freeway isn't
particularly suicidal to _drive_ on. But don't _leave_ it with out knowing
what you're doing.
