Oh, the humanity.

It _is_ Pynchon's humor that, IMHO, distinguishes him from the erudite but
mean-spirited works that are often described as "Pynchonesque."  He's
compassionate in the same way that Henry Miller or Henry Bukowski were, and
in the way William S. Burroughs is not.

The songs in _GR_ are fascinating.  One model that occurred to me, that I
never bothered to chase down, was Petronius's _Satyricon_, in which
sections of prose are punctuated with often ribald poetry.  Anyone else
find this provocative?
