I don't think I've ever met Bruce's ex-wife (although you never know), but I 
do have an OED right here, and whinge is there, plain as day:

Whinge v. Sc. and n. dial. [North. form of OE hwinsian...] intr. to whine. 

Note the 'intr.' - although it doesn't feel terribly intransitive while 
you're having it done to you ;). BTW, I suspect hwinsian is a pretty fair 
rhyme for pynchon...
