RokyE at aol.com notes that V had a different working title: yes, it did.
The title was "Under the Sign of the Yo_yo"--gawd-awful, but true,
according to a blurb in Pynchon Notes a few years back.
This title is of particular interest to me, because I am working on an
essay on the ideas of David Riesman as they appear in Pynchon's early
works. I have read every issue of Pynchon Notes (my master's thesis was on V)
and I quite distinctly remember seeing this mentioned at least twice. The
recurrent yo-yo metaphor is central to my argument since Riesman (a former
Sperry gyroscope exec during WWII) uses a related metaphor (the gyroscope)
in his work _The Lonely Crowd_. The argument still works without the blurb
about the working title, but it would be a nice thing to cite, I believe.
If anybody can give me a lead on where this passage (no more than a paragraph)
