...at the time GR was written, black holes were still a matter of
conjecture and FTL travel still was a licit topic for science fiction;
the presumption was that a black hole would become "visible" at
moderate ranges due to the chromatic fringing  as light originating
behind the object was selectively refracted by its Gravity.......
