He shot himself through the V, so I must read

After reading in the newspaper about the operations head of the 
Navy shooting himself through the chest and killing himself 
because of a "V" medal which he had at one time worn improperly,
I too must join in a reading of V. And may I take bets
as to if this scene will parody its way into some future
 Pynchon text---if its not already there---
