Well, TGTBATU was undeniably a great western, but the very best western
ever in my opinion was The Outlaw Josie Wales. Not only was the story a
great example of the "wanderer" theme (man loses family, becomes bitter,
finds makeshift family, loses makeshift family, becomes more bitter,
wanders alone, gains new extended family [in this case, a rather oddball
assortment of family members gathered one or a few at a time], lays old
ghosts to rest, and is [apparently] redeemed by love and friendship at the
end), but the movie has some of the best dialogue in _any_ movie. For
example, the entire scene of the first meeting of Eastwood and the late
lamented Chief Dan George, Eastwod's response of "vultures got to eat,
same as worms" when asked if he was going to bury the latest two scumbags
he had just killed, and the "missouri boat ride" scene, to name just a
few. I haven't read the book, if there is one, but I would imagine it's
good.
