Pynchon as world author

I was recently on vacation travelling through the Middle East where I met
an East-German who had read GR in translation.  While I am not surprised
that Pynchon has been translated, it just seems like it would be extremely
difficult.  I've read many books in translation by necessity.  I just have
pity on the translator.
