As someone who is always looking for spiritual and historical links
between northern England and the southern United States, I was interested by
the terminology of Ted's entry on the Civil War and cultural memory. Ted
speaks of 'Northrons' and 'Southrons' and this reminded me of Basil
Bunting (one of Britain's very best poets this century and not a little
Pynchonesque) who always spoke disparagingly of 'Southrons', i.e.,
occupants of the southern Home Counties and self-styled elitist
aggressors. Anybody know where this terminology comes from in the
context of the Civil War? Was it used at the time? Is it a Reb locution?
