Pynchon was on Letterman. Back when Letterman was on at eleven o'clock in the morning. They talked about Vineland and Brazilian bartenders. Also, a bit about the mail system.

You know, I'd like to see TP on Letterman, too. But only if he were _Tom
Pynchon_! I mean he would have to be sort of geeky; kind of zany; and
very, very entertaining.

What if he were like, normal? I mean, suppose, like in that old _New
Yorker- cartoon (12/25/95&1/1/96) he were just a
"happy-go-lucky-father-of-two-avid-golfer-longtime-magnetic-tape-salesman-kiwanis-member?"
Suppose he told Dave, "you know, I just wrote the damned book, man. I
needed some dough and this was the best way for me to get it. I don't
have clue as to what all the fuss is about. It's just a story. Kind of
funny, but just a story?"

I have read this book a couple of times. I really love it. I love
discussing it. But, you know, I would not want to pester Tom about it.
He wrote it. That's good enough for me.
