As with many works, GR often seems like a dream or a series of dreams 
to me, including the ever popular dream within a dream. If a dream, whose? 
Preterite Pirate? Sloppy Slothrop? Romantic Roger? 
Pynchon's? The readers? (all together now...)

Something like one of the "zones" in Stockhausen's "Hymnen". 
The one with the snoring and then rocketing (!) away around the world.

Realize it's cheap and facile, like many movies that end with "and 
then she awoke. It had been a dream, a wonderful dream, but..."
But there is that Wizofoz ref.
