[Bill and Diana--caught in a never-ending interplay of signifiers
"Great taste!"
"Less filling!"
"Sheerness!"
"Not sheer enough!"
"The glass is half empty!"
"No, its half full!"
...and out of shadowy, lighted darkness a voice booms
"Hey, I ordered a cheeseburger!"]
I think we've caught ourselves in Pynchon's little trap once again. So
what's beyond these oppositions? As Diana mentioned, Irigaray doesn't as
much set up these oppositions (although I still think there are many others
she could've chosen from) as simply point them out. So are the oppositions
inherent in the relationship between the two concepts opposed, or are they
posited by our cultural mindsets? Can we look beyond them and see other
alternatives--say, in that excluded middle we keep talking and forgetting about?
