Consider the origins of "science" suggested by Kubrick and Clark in 2001:
ape-man (intellect recently tickled by encounter with alien monolith) is
playing with bone.  Observes that bone causes things to move or get crushed
when applied with sufficient force.  Hypothesizes that bone would be dandy
tool to kill fresh meat or crush the skull of rival gang coveting water hole.
Result (a few million years later): space-travelling bombs and a computer that's
ready to do the thinking around here!
