Last WASTE of time (was alt.books.pynchon)

Hi all,

Well, that was a colossal waste of time.  Well, not really, I did learn a
few things.

1) It's not always a good thing to answer email "right away."
2) It's usually a good thing to think before responding to email (see 1).
3) Sometimes reading and rereading someone's post is important BEFORE
responding         (related to 1 and 2).
4) Not everyone is part of a "System," and "out to get you."
5) I like Pynchon-L, and the community it serves.

Now, that said, I would like to apologize for some of my hasty, and
partially -- though not entirely emotional responses to RedBug and Andrew.
I thought I brought up some very good points, but in the end, I've got to
tell you all, I've reconsidered my original proposal and have decided NOT to
create the newsgroup.  Though it did sound like a really good idea, I think
that the "disadvantages" do outweigh the "advantages," and that in the end,
it might wind up being a waste of time.

I would like to formally thank Andrew for his later posting, which brought
some very important issues to the discussion, and especially davemarc, whose
posting tipped the scale.

Most of my decision to NOT create the group had much to do with the negative
experiences some of you have reported from newsgroups such as alt.books and
such.  I thought the idea to ADVERTISE Pynchon-L was a good one, and I'll be
adding such information to my WWW page and will post to newsgroups the
pertinent info.

Please, to all concerned.  None of my postings were meant to be
inflammatory, and I likewise did not interpret any of yours' as such.  I
count the whole discussion as a learning experience, and a good example of
how such a forum as Pynchon-L better the Internet community.
