As a lurker, I feel like I may not have a right to inflict the list with this
but. . . . While I have no strong opinion on the creation of alt.books.pynchon
I'm disturbed by some of the elitist strains running through the debate--as
if opening up the discussion to the masses will ultimately destroy it. Most of
the discussion on the list is interesting and sophisticated, and I would hate
to see it undermined. Most of the Pynchon-ites I know are protective of
all things Pynchon, which is part of the fun, but I'd hate to see this list
become myopic.
Having vented, thanks to all of you who do post on the list--as a drowning
second year law student I can't contribute much to the list although it's
helped me keep my sanity. Ever since my dad gave me a copy of Crying in
8th grade, through my senior year at Pomona in Prof. Stonehill's Pychon
class, TRP's been a part of my world, and I'm glad this list is around to
pull my nose out of corporations reading.
