I deleted by mistake the recent message whose sender wanted to distinguish
libertarians from anarchists. Anyway, it brought _Slacker_ to mind. There's
this anarchist old-timer from the Spanish Civil War, performed quite
satirically by Louis Mackey. The guy is still angry at his ex-wife about
not having been there at the university (having had to spend the lunch-time
somewhere on South Congress instead) when Charles Whitman carried out his
great anarchist act by shooting those 14 people from the UT Main Building
tower. As he recalls this "greatest day" of Austin, he also makes scornful
remarks about Texan libertarians, who don't want to work for the common
good, but just care about their own business.

By the way, Louis M. has written some great essays on Pynchon, two books
on Kierkegaard, the first published monograph on Gilbert Sorrentino which
will come out before Christmas (now there's a Xmas present tip for you
all), etc. I'm very happy to have him as my instructor.
