How major of a role does gnosticism play in Pynchon? Does this have any
bearing on the idea of a bimodel world?

There's bipolarity all over the place starting early on (Keep cool but care)
but in _Gravity's Rainbow_ things begin to get tripolar (and beyond).

What would old Zarathrustra have thought of that?

It's maybe like leaving Bird still pursuing resolution--taking it to the
sea--to Ornette saying that old road has come to an end (to use the recent music examples).

But if you're a student one book you might look at is _Writing Pynchon_
by Alex McHoul and David Wills. It spends time on these ideas. Don't
remember if gnosticism is mentioned per se.
