Tom Ze suggests:
"I see Pynchon's use of homosexuality (at least in the sections dealing with
Mossmoon) as part of the '60s Left's discomfort with homosexuality, which
they associated with effete '30s Nazis...one finds this kind of thing
showing up in slightly different form in the work of Ken Kesey. You know,
tough working class guys who like a woman after a steak-and-beer dinner, etc
etc (reminder also of Jack Nicholson's Devil in _The Witches of Eastwick_)"
Even more so see Mailer's writings, where homosexuality is a symptom of
the sickness of Western civilization (not as new a notion as he'd have liked
to have thought). Interest, given the influence of the poly-sexual Beats
on TRP.
