Kelly's Heroes

If any movie has some parallel with GR in atmosphere it's Kelly's Heroes,
the story of a bunch of army wackos, losers, cheats, and ruffians who
want to steal some german gold behind enemy lines. They eventually
receive the aid of an SS officer who loans them the 88s mounted on his
Tiger so they can blow up the massive front door hiding the gold. They
then precede to share it. Because of their actions, the whole American
line is able to advance--Carrol O'Connor who I think would be a perfect
Major Marvy, is the general who is frustrated that his officers won't
advance until he learns of these guys who are unbeknownst to him on a
mission for themselves (he can hear their radio messages). He goes to
the front line trying to find them and give'em all medals but is thwarted
because Telly Savalas tells the townspeople that he's, meaning Carrol
O'Connor, Charles DeGalle, and Kelly's Heroes are able to escape.

Particular notables: Donald Sutherland as a bearded, hippie, long-hair
who's Shermans fire pink paint, the capt. from the love boat who is his
driver, who Donald hates because of his 'Bad vibes", there's also a
cowboy, some mexican dude, no guy from Brooklyn, no pretty-boy Iowa farm
boy, just a lot of dead germans, and gold for the taking.
