John,
Sorry for not responding sooner. I'm close to collapsing by now, having
spent the last 72 hours editing Radio B92 English-language news and updates
for their Internet site, frantically emailing the electronic media all
across Canada and Europe (the CNN coverage of the events in Belgrade that
you're seeing these days came as the direct result of the stuff I and the
editorial board of B92 began sending their way some time last Friday
night/Saturday morning), writing urgent appeals for the support of Protest
'96 and sending them to the .edu people I know and/or whose email addresses
I have managed to get hold of [shit, I should have remembered you sooner --
see how exhausted I must be], etc. For the past 72 hours, I've been
cruising along -- more like madly dashing off in all directions at once, in
fact -- on literally 2 and a half hours of sleep I finally managed to get in
the early hours of today.
What can I tell you? Paglia thrives on scandal, provocation, even physical
confrontation. Not my idea of a fair-play gel. Don't take me wrong:
whoever got into that fight with her must be as nuts as she certainly is.
And, I do not condone, let alone advocate the use of aggression to either
settle or prove anything. Am I being excessively defensive? Well, let me
just say that David's comment -- sans the fists-and-brawn stuff --
definitely rings some bells here and his analogy (I've actually heard the
mildest of the mild among my Brit .edu acquaintances make Nazi/Jew analogies
re. Paglia)sounds about right.
I'm about to crawl off to bed now and hope I'll have the sense and the
strength of character to do this one remaining sensible act I may be capable
of performing today (said the same thing last night, and see how *that*
turned out). Anyway,
all the best--
Vaska
