I've wondered about this too, Curt, as I've tried to get others to read and
enjoy Pynchon. The bizarre names always weeds out a few; the irresponsible
fantasy-rolls like the adenoid--or, more in my thoughts recently, the
smorgasbord scene later on where the key word is "ketchup"--catch a few
others. Yet who'd want to repress or edit them out? Maybe it's the author's
way, conscious or no, of culling.
I can't forget the writing instructor--infamous for a book on reptiles--who
looked at *Vineland* on my desk, back in 1991 and asked me, "Are you really
reading that?"
