In a society which increasingly looks to predigested sound bites to make
decisions (wheter presidential or the more mundane kind of beer to drink),
difficulty is shunned.
For me, the beauty of GR is the layers of meaning artfuly compacted in to
each sentence. I admire the effort of the craft, as well as the complexity
of references.
Gurdjieff ( who has a few oblique, passing references) had stated to the
effect..."easy things are not taken seriously, the difficult commands the
neccessary attention" In my case this is true....I can read a Douglas Adams
book <g> in an hour....GR takes weeks or months ...
Pynchons books stay with me, my mind grinding away until little epiphanies
pop up even years after reading one line.....
Plus, they are a great value ... I got a hardcopy edition of GR for $1.00
that works out to seven cents a pound :)

PS my June 1967 Dell paperback of BDSLILLUTM has the pynchon blurb in it 1st
page, and qoute on back cover
