Okay, so yesterday we had the Brady Bunch at the Grand Canyon
experience. Mike and I were hiking the mountains near our apt. and we
were just at the top of the second smaller mountain when we realized we
should turn back; it was soon to get dark and we were beat. So, we head
back down and are about to climb the last mountain up (which headed back
down to the parking lot) when a couple--extremely buff and
fit-looking--told us to avoid the path cause there was a snake--a
rattlesnake--under a rock to the right. It was the only apparent path up
and the other way was mountain after mountain, which they told us to
follow to the path--They did it all the time! MInd you, they were
extremely fit. Mike and Iwere so winded we could only dream of home. I
literally *panicked* and cried and shook, like really shook, cause the
sun was going down and then the REAL snakes came out, the park closed,
nobody to help, etc. Mike asked if he'd REALLY HAVE TO SMACK ME AROUND
so I would get control of myself. He lead us up the second mountain and
I kept saying "no way will we make it; what are we going to do?" and all
other manner of panick-type dialogue, all the while wondering, will he
divorce me for this? Finally, we decided to take the side of the
mountain down, directly to the path below (which we could see). A sign
said this area was closed--probably because the real mean snakes lived
there--cause of land erosion or something. Plus, it was brush, potential
snake heaven. BUT--we couldn't make it the other way and it was getting
darker and I was getting more hysterical by the minute. MEANWHILE, buffo
up there was THROWING BIG ROCKS AT THE SNAKE, and I kept thinking that it
would slither down to us to reek his revenge!
Well, we made it down to the path and are still alive to tell
about it. MIke has decided not to file.

Our first hiking trip in AZ. MOre later . . .
